They Say Bad Dogs Have More Fun

By Letho Maseko

When the owner calls the dog bad, the truth of the matter is the owner is probably the cause of this. It's irritating when walking down the sidewalk in your own neighborhood only to have a dog jump up on your clean clothes. Many people find that their neighbors' pets like nothing more than using other people's yards as a toilet. The dogs are no worse than the children of the neighbor. When adults in a home are clueless about their responsibilities, you can expect only bad behavior from pets and kids.

The dog must be taught to behave within some set parameters when around people. Ask any smart owner and he would tell you that it is wise to take the help of a dog trainer to learn the handling methods without dampening his natural spirits. Ask the help of your veterinary surgeon or pet store to locate trainers who conduct private or group sessions; alternatively you could go online and take the help of an online course.

This training could teach owners how to be in command of their pets. At times, trainers will admit it's easier to train the dog than the owner! Dogs that must be leash trained for walking in public or at the park need practice; this begins around the yard or in a smaller location. Barking is often a behavior that distresses owners and neighbors. Shouting or punishing your pet for engaging in this normal communication is counterproductive - as well as confusing to the animal.

Remember when the dog needs your attention, is hungry or thirsty, they will bark. A barking dog can also be a strong deterrent to burglars, so completely suppressing its bark might not be in your best interest. Many owners make the mistake of letting a puppy bark as they please but change their attitude when they grow older.

Trainers can help teach you how to reinforce behavior that you desire with both praise and treats. You could start rewarding and motivating your puppy so he will continue with the good behavior; most animals will normally stop doing things for which they get reprimanded. It is important to know that you cannot teach a dog to learn a behavior which goes against his nature. You should look into breeds that exhibit particular characteristics if you want them from your pet. When does a dog become good? Well, when you train them with patience, resolve and of course, a great deal of affection.
