Be sure to leave approximately an inch in diameter around the base of your plant. Otherwise, you may create a build up of moisture and heat.

As you can see, these basic herb gardening tips are not difficult at all. Purchasing some good quality tools to use as well as some seeds is a fine beginning point. Then you'll need to find a spot of nice soil and start planting!

Raises for big shoulders part 2

Here we go again on shoulders. For beginners, or serious bodybuilders, everyone wants to fill out their clothes better, without those shoulder pads that are out of fashion anyways. In my last article I dealt with presses and now (as you can see from the title) I'll be talking about raises.

Raises work the deltoids and compliment press exercises for building up the shoulders. Raises use isolation, meaning you use lighter weights than you normally would, but still get excellent results. Each of the exercises below works a different part of the deltoids: front, back and side.

Front Dumbbell Raises:

Standing, hold a barbell in each hand. With your palms turned in to face your body, lift one barbell in a sweeping motion until it is over your head. Lower slowly to starting position, then raise the other barbell in same motion. Repeat.

Very simple but very effective exercise for the front deltoids.

Standing Dumbbell Lateral Raises:

Grab a dumbbell in each hand and stand bent forward slightly and hold out the dumbbells at arms length. Lift both dumbbells outward, to either side and then turn your wrists gently (sort of a pouring motion). Lift the dumbbells slowly to just a little above shoulder level, then lower them slowly and repeat, Remember to use your muscles to move the weights in this exercise, not the momentum of the weights.

Bent-Over Raises (Lateral):

While standing, hold a dumbbell in each hand and bend forward 45 degrees. The dumbbells should be hanging at arm's length and your palms facing each other. Staying in this position, lift the dumbbells out to your sides. Slowly return to your beginning position and repeat.

Whew! These exercises will be a little challenging if you haven't done any shoulder workouts before, but they will get results for you, guaranteed. Well, you've got some work ahead of you and as for myself: I'm off to the gym! Until next time!

Our earth's natural resources are dissipating as the population continues to grow. While there are still parks which preserve the beauty of our land and its wildlife, no one knows how much longer conservation will continue.

And there are those that are allergic to aspirin. The chemical salicylate which is found in aspirin is also found in high amounts in fruits and vegetables.

Am I seriously telling you to avoid fruits and vegetables and eat fatty foods instead? No, certainly not. For most people this is excellent advice. The point I'm making is that you are an individual. You have your own dietary requirements and needs. There is nobody on earth like you, so don't let anybody else tell you what to eat. Get to know your own body's needs. Listen to what it is trying to tell you.

Don't elaborate on a particular topic just to fill up space.

Keep Track of Time

If you've got a particular amount of time to finish each question, make sure you move on once your time is up. Don't put any "finishing touches" on any one question because you're going to need this time to finish the whole exam. Move onto the next question so that you give each one adequate time. In addition, each question may become progressively harder, and you'll need to stay within each question's timeframe with your responses.

Finish Up

You may not be satisfied with your finished essay, but this is a completely normal response. Essay-style tests don't have definitive answers, like multiple choice tests do. What prompted this claim is that measuring and quantifying the hypnotic phenomena is subjective. Because different people respond differently to hypnotic suggestions, too often this lack of measurement determines in some minds that hypnosis is only imaginary or hopeful.

You've seen in Hollywood movies and in stage hypnosis shows that a person can do things that he normally wouldn't consider doing, thus the controversy behind hypnosis is falsified once more. You do not lose control of mind and body like most people suggest. What we can confirm is that being put into the state of mind of hypnosis in no way makes a person demonstrate anything that would violate his or her ethical, moral, or religious beliefs.

What You Should Know About the Hoodia 60 Minutes and BBC Reports

After researching and writing on hoodia gordonii and hoodia supplements for years, I felt it was important to write an article about the hoodia 60 Minutes and BBC reports that are supposedly endorsing specific hoodia diet pills. The BBC and 60 Minutes never endorsed a specific hoodia diet pill. Any website that claims they did is lying.

It is all too common to see the words, "Endorsed by" or "As featured on" and then see the CBS 60 Minutes logo and the BBC logo on websites that are promoting or selling hoodia supplements. This makes people who are shopping for hoodia supplements believe that the products on these websites have been endorsed by 60 Minutes and the BBC. The truth is these two media companies never mentioned a specific hoodia diet pill, tested or endorsed one.

60 minutes reporter, Leslie Stahl, did do a story on the hoodia gordonii plant on November 21, 2004. She traveled to South Africa's Kalahari Desert to see the native plant growing in the wild. She ate a small piece of it. She later reported that she wasn't hungry all day and that the hoodia gordonii plan did work in suppressing her appetite.

That's all she said about hoodia. 60 minutes did not endorse any specific hoodia supplement. The CBS program didn't even feature a hoodia supplement to begin with! You would never know this unless you actually read the transcripts of the 60 minutes program yourself. Unfortunately, all too many hoodia sellers have capitalized on this story and have twisted it to their advantage to sell more of their products.

The BBC report is another example where hoodia sellers have taken a story and have spun it to their advantage. The BBC did a documentary on hoodia in 2003. Tom Mangold, a well-known BBC correspondent, also traveled to the Kalahari Desert to try the hoodia gordonii plant himself. Mr. Mangold and his camera man each ate a small piece of the plant. The pair reported that they, "did not even think about food" for the rest of the day. Even more amazing, they reported that they didn't want breakfast the next morning and their appetite during lunchtime was nearly nonexistent.

Again, you'll notice the BBC story did not even test a specific hoodia supplement, let alone endorse one. Just as Leslie Stahl had done in her 60 Minutes story, Tom Mangold of the BBC actually ate the plant itself. Neither reporter tried a specific hoodia product. And they certainly didn't endorse a specific brand.

The next time you visit a website promoting or selling a hoodia supplement that claims their product was featured or endorsed by 60 Minutes and the BBC, immediately click to another website. Any company that is willing to misrepresent a media story so that it works to their advantage so they can sell more of their products obviously isn't honest. If they aren't willing to be honest about something as simple as the media coverage of hoodia on 60 Minutes and the BBC, how honest do you really think they are about the quality and authenticity of the product they are selling?

But achieving that correct height/weight ratio isn't all there is to successful weight loss. A man can be six feet tall, his weight can be within the ideal weight limits according to those height/weight charts - yet he can still not be physically fit. Scales don't discriminate between "fat pounds" and "muscle pounds."

Success Factor #2: Achieving a lower percentage of body fat

The body's fat percentage is just that: the % fat your body contains. Your body weight is the total of everything - muscle, fat bone, etc. - combined. So the number of pounds reduced isn't enough information to determine whether your weight loss program is successful.

The word diabetes is common enough. Nearly everyone has heard it and may know someone who has it. But how many know what it is?

Chronic high blood glucose levels characterize the medical condition called diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the cells resist utilizing insulin to absorb glucose or when the system does not produce sufficient insulin.

The most common form of diabetes, Type 2 occurs when the cells resist properly using insulin. The majority of diabetes cases (90%) are Type 2. Type 1 is rarer, occurring in about 7% of cases. In Type 1 the body fails to make sufficient insulin. Approximately 7% of Americans have diabetes; it is most common in people age 60 or older.

There are other types, such as gestational diabetes that sometimes afflicts pregnant women, and others. But they are much less common and, in some cases, temporary.

Typical symptoms for either type are abnormally frequent urination, produced by the body's attempt to clear excess glucose by elimination. As a result, unusual thirst is common, compensated for by drinking higher than average amounts.

Traditionally, Type 1 has been called juvenile onset diabetes, since it usually afflicts children or teenagers. Type 2 has been designated adult onset diabetes, since it generally occurs in older people. An autoimmune system malfunction of the pancreas may be the main cause of Type 1 diabetes. Obesity and other lifestyle factors may lead to Type 2.

Both Type 1 and Type 2 have genetic factors. Regardless of what initiates the condition, all forms of diabetes are the result of a failure by the body to clear glucose from the blood due to insufficient insulin or malfunctioning insulin use.

The hormone insulin regulates the body's glucose level. Glucose is produced by the body through the digestion of carbohydrates. The glucose then supplies energy for all the body's important functions. Insulin's function is to help the cells use glucose.

Diabetes occurs if the body has insufficient insulin or if the cells resist taking in glucose because of the improper use of insulin. Most insulin is produced in the pancreas, so problems with this organ can result in diabetes.

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are usually long-term conditions. Fortunately, much can be done to reduce the bad effects of this chronic disorder. Today, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are both manageable conditions. Diet, exercise and easier treatments allow both forms to be controlled. Both types of diabetes can range from mild to severe. Sometimes the insulin deficit or faulty use is just slightly below normal levels. In severe cases, the pancreas may make virtually no insulin or the cells may almost completely resist it.

Diabetes can have serious side-effects if untreated. Excess glucose taxes all of the body's systems and can cause various complications. The severity of these complications depends on the level of insulin resistance or deprivation.

But now, the same scientific institutions are validating the use of essential oils, and their profound anti-anxiety effects. So now, rather than "running for the shelter of mother's little helper" when things get a little hectic, you can bypass the liquor store, the pharmacy and the junk-food isle and head confidently to the natural health market for a little bottle of scented bliss. Maybe not as decadents for everyone, but the majority of mothers and generally health and wellness-conscious folks will appreciate the healthful choice for themselves, their children and their families.

In recent years, more and more clinical and laboratory research is uncovering the efficacy of essential oils used for their anti-anxiety effects. Thankfully, the application of the oils in these studies is relatively simple: both the inhalation of aroma and the topical application have demonstrable therapeutic activity. These methods are easily replicated by the professional and aromatherapy enthusiast alike. The oils can be diffused an any diffuser (as the concentrations from high end nebulizers are not required for this practice), used in aromatherapy massage, or simply worn as natural perfume. Several readily available essential oils have statistically significant data to support their use in stress reduction - here's a look at some of the most often studied ones...

Lavender has been the most frequently studied of all the essential oils. Its anti-anxiety (or simply 'relaxing') action has been documented both in the laboratory (using stressed-out mice and rats) and in clinical environments with actual human beings. Many, many studies have reported the same thing: inhalation of lavender oil brings calm under a great variety of conditions. At least one study compared Lavender oil aroma to that of Juniper, Cypress, Geranium, Jasmine and Frankincense. It was only the Frankincense that had a somewhat similar effect, but not nearly as effective as Lavender. Several studies compared Lavender's effect to diazepam (Valium) with Lavender's aroma having similar (but likely more healthy) calming results. In other studies, Lavender has been shown to improve sleep, decrease conflict between animals, and reduce the amount of pain medication needed by recovering hospital patients.

Sandalwood oil is another well-known stress reducer. For those that may not enjoy the floral aroma of Lavender, Sandalwood could be the oil of choice. Its warm, earthy scent is grounding and centering, being used by some spiritual traditions to enhance relaxed, focused meditative states. The science shows similar results - Sandalwood oil topically applied relaxed the body while stimulating psyche. Studies on sleep/wake cycles using Sandalwood oil topically improved the quality of sleep and lessened waking episodes. A small study using Sandalwood suggested the oil may be helpful in reducing anxiety for palliative care patients. Beyond the scope of Western scientific inquiry, Sandalwood oils and pastes have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of psychological disorders, utilizing its sublime mental-health promoting actions.

While Sandalwood and Lavender have the most data to back them up, many other essential oils have had positive test results. Rose is a standout; it has also been tested alongside Valium (apparently the anti-anxiety gold standard) with better and longer-lasting results. The rose aroma's effect seem to increase over time, where as benzodiazepines' effect will tend to decrease - and the test subjects appeared less confused or sedated. Rose, like Lavender, reduced conflict between test subjects as well. For a little variety, you can mix Rose and Sandalwood together (try a 1:4 ratio)...this is a classic Indian aromatic blend combining two of the world's best known anti-anxiety scents.

Other oils found in research databases include Angelica, Chamomile, Lemon, Lemongrass, Tagetes and Ylang Ylang. Some oils tested didn't show repeatable results in the laboratory environment, but if you find and oil aroma that you find relaxing, it's more than likely not purely 'in your head'; the olfactory (smell) sense is the one of the five senses most directly wired to the brain's emotional centers. These are, in turn, directly wired to the autonomic nervous system controlling functions such as heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure - all of which are closely tied to one's level of stress.

So what to do with these stress relieving wonders? They're really easy to use - one of the great features of aromatherapy. Both topical application and inhalation show repeatable results in laboratory tests. A common method of topical application is to dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil like Jojoba down to 10% or less. Essential oils tend to pass easily into the bloodstream when applied to the skin, so nearly any technique will do. A few drops of your mixture can be placed on the wrists and rubbed together (this is nice, as you'll smell the aroma as well). For inhalation, there's a great many aromatherapy diffusers available, from little, inexpensive plug in units, to professional models which make a cloud of pure, intense aroma. For anxiety relief, any model where you can smell the aroma will do the job - the higher end diffusers tend to bathe a larger area in your aroma of choice.

How to chose an oil for you, your family or friends? Aromatherapy choices tends to be some personal. Some folks go mad for Rose Geranium, and other folks can only think of 'grandma' (in a nice way!) with the bright scents of florals. These same individuals will often love the grounding aromas of the woods: Sandalwood, Frankincense, Spruce, etc. The beauty of the scientific data is that it's not one type of essential oil that's effective to support health and wellness naturally - it's the santalol in Sandalwood, the linalool in Lavender, and the citronellol in Rose that imparts much of the therapeutic effect. Although the bananas and the milk have a great deal of sugar, your body needs the potassium, the calcium from the milk, and the carbohydrates for energy. The bananas also help curb that craving for sweets you are having by day four.

The fifth day of the 7 days soup diet includes tomatoes and meat. There is also a serving of soup. Meat wise, you can eat 10 to 12 oz of it. As for tomatoes, take a can or 6 fresh ones to detoxify the uric acid in you.

On the sixth day of the 7 days soup diet, you can have meat and vegetables. However you cannot have any baked potatoes. There is no limit to the amount of meat or vegetables that you wish to eat here.

Day Seven: Final day of the 7 day soup diet and you should have lost between 10- 17 pounds at this point. On this day you can have brown rice, your soup, non- sweetened juices, vegetables, and water. There is a difference between weight loss and fat loss; when you are working out your fat loss plan, you should focus on the fat loss instead of weight loss.

It's a personal choice when it comes to picking which workout plan to do. In general, you should plan your workout plan as you naturally see fit and feel comfortable in doing, at least for 4-6 weeks. Consistent is the key here. Then commit to the plan and work it out, if you do not find you managed to lose fat, amend your workout plan.

If you have changed your plan accordingly, yet it's not working out for you.

If you have followed basic dietary guideline, along with good eating habits and exercise daily and after some months it's not yet working, you may be advised to see your family doctor. If not for a medical conditions, there should be no reason a dietary plan is not working out.

People tend to give up too easily too quickly and they don't take responsibility for the reality that they are the only persons to take account for their well-being. The brutal fact is that few instances that prove people would gain weight without deliberately ignoring their health outlook.

At this point is would be a good idea to set up some appointments with a family physician. They should perform a few tests to see if there is any real reason why your body is preventing weight loss from occurring. While the doctor is performing tests for malfunctions they may advise some methods and eating plans to help with the fat loss. You may feel frustrated at this point, but don?t give up yet. Even if you have tried fat loss exercise plans and dietary changes and nothing has seemed to work, there is still hope. Simply follow along with your doctor and try out what he suggests.

Why Your Sex Life Matters If You're Trying to Lose Weight

Weight loss is not just a matter of energy in, energy out, as most diet companies would have us believe. Just as important as these 2 factors is our metabolic rate, but few people understand how lifestyle factors, including sexual relationships, impact on metabolic rate.

If your sexual relationship is healthy, meaning that it provides the emotional bonding necessary for your wellbeing, then it is supporting good metabolic performance, and supporting weight loss and the maintenance of a healthy weight.

The reason why diet companies fail to help nearly 100% of their clients is that they fail to understand the reasons for the weight gain in the first place. But when lifestyle factors all support health, overweight and obesity disappear - no dieting or harsh exercise routines required!

I'll be writing about other lifestyle factors in other articles about weight loss, but this article is specifically about one factor: the state of your most intimate relationship.

The Importance of Your Most Intimate Relationship

From "fast-food" sex to "gourmet" sex, intimate partners usually have a range of sexual styles or experiences but what they all have in common is that they are expressions of intimacy that non-verbally communicate the state of the relationship as well as the wellbeing (or otherwise) of the partners at that time.

When you consider that sex is such a powerful way to communicate, it may become obvious to you that you need to look at what it is you're actually saying!

Being on the Same "Wavelength

If you and your partner aren't using the same "language" or aren't on the same "wavelength" you're most likely experiencing a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding. This leads to feelings being hurt, to disappointment, and even to resentment.

This is not so much to do with technique, but rather with things like the amount of eye contact, the facial expressions, or the noise you make (or don't make). In conversation "body language" accounts for a very important 70% or more. In sex, it's practically all about body language.

Practice being more aware of your partner's non-verbal expressions; mirror those back and notice what happens to the quality of your interaction as a result.

Are You Actually Compatible?

Obviously not every partnership is between people who are naturally compatible. Different body clocks may have libido rising at completely different times and there's not much you can do about that if your libidos virtually live in different time zones.

Perhaps she is like many women who tend to feel the cold and who sleep so much better wrapped up in flannalette pj's. If he finds the flannelette a most unsavoury companion and can only become sexually interested if she's wearing not much at all, there is also a problem!

Perhaps he's the "strong, silent type" even during sex, but she finds this cold or even repellent.

Or perhaps he likes to wear women's clothing but she perceives that as being unmasculine and not in any way sexually interesting to her.

Couples can and do overcome these barriers, with a lot of love, a lot of commitment, and sometimes a lot of therapy.

However if these types of incompatibilities are not worked on, or are left unspoken, they can and do eventually undermine the relationship. The best thing to do is to admit the mismatches openly and honestly, maintain respect in relation to each other's differences, and if necessary elect to work with an experienced therapist to get help to resolve them.

If only we lived in the sort of ideal world where people were more aware of the variety of human nature, were able to acknowledge and accept their own characteristics, and feel comfortable and confident in sharing those with potential partners. I'm sure the divorce rate would plummet.

And that brings us to .

The Vital Importance of Honesty

Oh how little sexual honesty there is in so many relationships. Not so much outright lying (I'm not talking about infidelity) but in "settling" for unsatisfactory sex. And how difficult is it, after years of misleading your intimate partner about the amount of satisfaction you're getting, to now "come clean"!

But that's what you need to do if you're committed to building (or rebuilding) a truly fulfilling intimate relationship.

Have you heard the old joke about women faking orgasms but men faking relationships? Well really they're one and the same when it comes to unsatisfactory marriages. A faked orgasm is a lie, pretending that an encounter is fulfilling when it is anything but.

And unfortunately "faking" soon becomes the closest the woman will get to orgasm because in terms of behaviour theory, she has trained herself to associate this "fake" state with sex. I knew one woman who decried the fact that she even faked orgasm during masturbation!

So "settling" for unsatisfactory sex, and particularly faking satisfaction, is good for neither the relationship nor the individual.

One of the best ways to deal with this is to take courage and actually write down (because it can be more comfortable to write it than say it):

1) What is not happening during sex that you want to happen, 2) What is happening during sex that you don't want to happen, 3) What words you might actually say to your partner, or what things you might actually do, to communicate the changes you want

For most people this is very unfamiliar territory and it could help your comfort to practice a little first. You might benefit from reading chapter 4 of my book "Intimate Partners", where you learn to pre-frame a request (and also respond resourcefully to criticism) and chapter 6, where you'll learn to ask more directly for what you want!

Your Time Out

What makes an intimate relationship intimate is it's exclusivity and privacy, so without sufficient experience of privacy together, and without that feeling of exclusivity, intimacy can struggle to survive.

With all the busy demands of daily life, particular where there are new babies or small children, the challenges of intimacy may seem insurmountable. Keep in mind that the world, including your children, must turn around YOU. Together you are the solid foundation to their lives and it's up to you to keep that foundation intact and healthy.

Sorting Out those Sex Issues

I believe that adult human beings actually need to have immensely satisfying sex, much the same as they need to breathe good, clean air, or to eat good-quality nutritious food, in order to function well physically and mentally. And yet many couples are tolerating a less-than-satisfactory sex life because they just don't know what to do to make it any better. That's not good for the relationship, and it's not good for the people in the relationship.

I want to assure you that you can have hope, and that you can make a difference and enjoy a much better sexual relationship, even if that means working with an experienced and compassionate therapist to get the goals you're after.

With your sex life sorted, that's one lifestyle factor you can "tick off" as you work toward the greater health and wellbeing required for permanent weight loss.
